Endodontics
Endodontic treatment is all about certain parts of the tooth; namely the pulp and the roots. As you may know, when either the pulp of the tooth or the roots become compromised, the whole health of the tooth is compromised, too. This is when the chances for the tooth to be lost really get raised. We offer endodontic services in Nashville, TN and surrounding areas for our new and current patients.
Understanding Endodontics
Endodontics is a dental specialty that deals with problems inside the tooth, particularly involving the pulp and root canals. The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels—it’s what helps teeth grow and develop. But once a tooth is fully matured, it can survive just fine without the pulp.
If the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, either from decay, trauma, or repeated dental procedures, it needs to be removed. If it’s left untreated, the infection can spread and eventually lead to an abscess or the loss of the tooth.
When Endodontic Treatment Is Needed
There’s a few signs that might indicate a problem with the pulp. Some are obvious, others not so much. You should contact us if you’re experiencing any of the following:
- Throbbing or constant tooth pain
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
- Swelling around a tooth or in your face
- A small bump near the base of the tooth
- A tooth that’s suddenly turned gray or dark
Sometimes, though, the pulp can be infected without causing any major symptoms at first. That’s one reason why regular dental checkups are so important.
Root Canal Therapy
The most common endodontic procedure is the root canal. During this treatment, we remove the damaged pulp, clean out the inside of the tooth, and seal it. Usually, a crown is placed afterward to protect the tooth and restore your bite.
Despite what you may have heard, root canals aren’t something to be afraid of. In fact, most people compare it to getting a routine filling. Local anesthetic keeps you comfortable throughout, and the relief afterward is usually pretty immediate.
The goal of a root canal is to save your natural tooth. Whenever possible, keeping your own teeth is better for your bite, your jawbone, and your overall oral health.
Additional Endodontic Services
Root canals aren’t the only thing we offer. Other services include:
Root canal retreatment – If a previous root canal didn’t heal properly or becomes reinfected, we can re-enter the tooth and fix the problem.
Apicoectomy – This is a type of minor surgery that removes the tip of the tooth’s root along with any inflamed tissue.
Cracked tooth repair – Teeth with internal fractures often need endodontic care to prevent further damage.
Trauma-related care – If you’ve had a dental injury (from sports or an accident), endodontic treatment might be needed to save the tooth.
